Part of the Emerald Scientific Team and the Cannabis Industry - and Proud of It!Posted August 05 2016
As I finish up my first week as Chief Technical Officer at Emerald Scientific, I wanted to publish the first of what will be many blogs pertaining to the cannabis industry. First off, I’d like to say that I’m thrilled to be a part of the Emerald Scientific team. These folks are among the best in the industry, and they’ve accomplished so much in the years that I’ve known them. I’m equally thrilled to finally be a part of the cannabis industry as a whole. In my previous job at Restek, I devoted most of my time over the last few years working for and with the cannabis industry, but I was an outsider looking in, and I had no real skin in the game. Now, as part of Emerald Scientific, I have a lot of skin in this game, and I’m super excited about it.
As CTO of Emerald Scientific, I get to pursue a nerd’s dream. I get to raise the company to an even higher level of technical excellence, educate the cannabis community, develop new applications for cannabis analytics, improve on established methods, and work on innovative new products – nothing could be better! I’m a lifelong nerd, and I’m so happy – and frankly surprised - to have found a home with this industry. When I began my career in analytical chemistry, I never imagined that I would find myself in the middle of an industry made up of ‘the cool kids’. I couldn’t be happier about how things turned out.
I’ve been involved with the cannabis industry for over six years now, and I’ve had the privilege of watching cannabis analytics mature from its humble beginnings to where it is today: analyzing trace pesticides with MS/MS detection, discussing regulatory issues, and constantly advancing the science of cannabis. We’re such a unique industry: we’re fragmented throughout the country yet still committed to pursuing self-regulation based on science that’s still brand new. Everyone in this industry in some way a risk-taker, an entrepreneur, an early-adopter…and dare I say it…just a teeny bit of a rebel. I’m proud of this industry and I’m proud to be a part of the Emerald Scientific team.
This first blog certainly wasn’t technical, but I’ve made a resolution to regularly update the Emerald Scientific blog with technical content on applications, products, and interesting lab experiments. SRI has very kindly loaned me an 8610C GC with all the bells and whistles to use while we complete the process of setting up my permanent lab space. I’ve set it up in my basement, which has been coined ‘the nerd cave’. I can’t wait to post all the fun things I’m going to do with it. Make sure to check back regularly for new posts.
